Donato Giovannelli is a research scientist at YHouse. He is also a research fellow at the Earth-Life Science Institute in Tokyo and Rutgers University, a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and an adjunct researcher at the National Research Council of Italy. He is also the co-founder of two Italian-based startups, Nano-Tech and Cypress Biotechnology. He received a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the Polytechnic University of Marche and a Ph.D. in Applied Biology from the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. He is interested in the emergence and evolution of metabolisms and the diversity of prokaryotic life.

Research
Donato’s current research is focused on the emergence and evolution of metabolisms. He is using model environments that resemble early Earth to reconstruct the evolution metabolisms. His research spans ecology, microbiology, and evolutionary biology mixing traditional and cutting-edge molecular tools. He is also interested in prokaryotic communication and organization in biofilms and the exploration of remote and extreme environments on Earth and beyond.
