The core activity of YHouse is to understand the fundamental nature of awareness by bringing together researchers from different fields. There are many deep questions about awareness that no single discipline can answer. Such questions include: Can machines ever become conscious? Why and how does the brain extract meanings from sensory data through subjective experience? What is the formal structure of our conscious experience? How can we characterize the nature of information from the intrinsic perspective of living systems, brains, and computers?
These questions appear in many disciplines of science and technology such as philosophy, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, linguistics, physics, sociology, information theory, and so on, and are key to understanding the nature of awareness. Some of our initial research activities fall in the following rubrics:
- Synthetic Awareness
- Origins of Agency
- Awareness in Society
- Perspectives on Cognition
